Mike Wells - Mastering Engineer

Beginning with musical instruments at the age of 7, Mike grew up a guitarist. An avid 4-Tracker during the 80's, Mike developed a curiosity of electronics and recording to accompany a passion for musical composition and performance.

Moving to San Francisco in the late 80's, Mike was active in the Bay Area Thrash & Death Metal scenes performing and recording with local and signed bands Wrekking Machine (Mausoleum) and Epidemic (Metal Blade). Active in pre-production, arrangements, and assistant engineering, Mike's drive began to shift from performance to the more technical aspects of recording, mixing, and electronics while he pursued music theory at local State College.

Upon being introduced to MIDI and computing in the early 90's, Mike jumped into the world of electronic music, founding the electronic group Gridlock that went on for 10 years to create releases for a variety of labels including Metropolis (US) and Hymen (Germany).

Along with writing producing original music, the studio (5-25 Audio) was opened-up for specific electronic projects with Mike engineering, mixing, and mastering.

As more electronic labels began booking time for mastering, 5-25 Audio became dedicated to mastering and changed its name to Mike Wells Mastering in 2003.

Throughout the last decade, Mike has been driven to improving all aspects of the mastering lifecycle:
On the studio side, Mike Wells Mastering has meticulously improved signal path and fidelity through minimized componentry and modiifications to existing gear. Adding specialized pieces such as the Bay Area's only Aria-equipped 1" 2-Track, Mike Wells Mastering stands out as an analog paradise for sonic quality.
On the back-end technical side, Mike Wells Mastering was the first studio on the West Coast to become an individual ISRC Code Agent from the RIAA, offering ISRC Code generation and integration into the mastering process for independent and label clients alike. Additionally, Mike has been a pioneer in the integration and education of modern Metadata initiatives into the modern mastering lifecycle via trade articles, seminars, and project integration.

Today, an active voting member of NARAS and AES, Mike has been a guest speaker at conferences such as Tape Op Con 2005 and 2007, hosted mastering events at his studio during AES 2006 and 2008, along with teaching and lectures and various state, community, and technical colleges on the subject of mastering. With published articles in various trade magazines and at the Mike Wells Mastering website and in 2009 adding video tutorials on the subject of mastering (as hosted by Mix Magazine), Mike actively represents his commitment to the audio engineering community.

With a proven record of innovation within the mastering industry and growing clientele, it is no surprise that Mike Wells Mastering is quickly becoming a leader in the modern world of audio mastering.
