A commitment to excellence in audio & serving the audio community:
Today, Mike sits on the Board of Governors for the NARAS (Grammy) SF Chapter, along with being the Co-Chair of Workshops for the 129th AES Convention held in San Francisco, 2010. Mike has been a moderator and guest speaker at conferences such as Tape Op Con 2007 and 2008, AES 129, hosted mastering events at his studio during AES 2006, 2008, and 2010, along with teaching and lectures and various state, community, and technical colleges on the subject of mastering. With published articles in various trade magazines and at the Mike Wells Mastering website, this content has now been ported to support the launch of an interactive article platform called "Audio In Action". A strong believer in educating youth to the advantages of great sound, Mike created the "Audio Outreach" seminar series which ran for 2 years at Leo's Pro Audio in Oakland, CA. This initiative brought a large collection of attendees every other month to discuss audio engineering topics & techniques, along with a relaxed, community atmosphere which captured the attention of Mix Magazine to host video tutorials on the subject of mastering. Looking ahead, Mike is a member of The Long Now Foundation and is committed to active involvement in bringing great sound into the 21st Century with new initiatives surrounding Digital Distribution and Metadata handling.
After dedicating himself to mastering in 2001, Mike has been driven to improving all aspects of the mastering lifecycle:
• On the studio side, Mike Wells Mastering has meticulously improved signal path and fidelity through minimized componentry and modiifications to existing gear. Adding specialized pieces such as the California's only Aria-equipped 1" 2-Track, Mike Wells Mastering stands out as an analog paradise for sonic quality.
• On the back-end technical side, Mike Wells Mastering was the first studio on the West Coast to become an individual ISRC Code Registrar from the RIAA, offering ISRC Code generation and integration into the mastering process for independent and label clients alike. Additionally, Mike has been a pioneer in the integration and education of modern Metadata initiatives into the modern mastering lifecycle via trade articles, seminars, and project integration.
• On the customer service side, Mike created a modern workflow to meet the mastering needs of today's artists via the Groundwork Session (tm) process and proprietary online tools to help clients maximize the benefits of mastering.
Prior to mastering, Mike performed audio engineering duties at 5-25 Audio, and freelance audio work at studios around the San Francisco Bay Area. A musician since age 7, Mike has written and performed with an array of bands since the 80's including Gridlock (Hymen, Metropolis), Epidemic (Metal Blade), and Wrekking Machine (Mausoleum) to name a few. Finally, with a background of music theory training, Mike brings a wide array of musical, engineering, technical, and customer service skills to create a mastering service unlike any other in the country today.
With a proven record of innovation within the mastering industry, it is no surprise that Mike Wells Mastering is quickly becoming a leader in the modern world of audio mastering.
